As reflective practitioners, graduates will demonstrate the following professional values:

1. Value self and others, i.e., possess confidence in one’s decisions and value diversity in its many forms.

To further disseminate the importance of Indigenous Information Literacy I presented at the Oregon Library Association Poster session at the 2009 Salem Conference. During the poster session I was able to one on conversations with several professional curious about the topic. (Photo)

 

In the Course LI850: Management of Information Agencies I put together this toolkit with and student in my cohort. The topic of Human Relations holds important place in the library setting, creating procedures, hiring and rules that staff must follow. One of the striking similarities between libraries and HR is their mutual emphasis on ethics and diversity. This toolkit is meant to be resource for our classmates in the professional careers under and in management positions. Understanding the duties and obligations of another position helps “you” perform your job better and stronger team in the workplace.

2. Advocate for others by displaying a commitment to quality and equity.

For the course LI813: Basic Print and Electronic Information, I wrote a proposal for expanding the Spanish reference section at the Milwaukie Ledding Library a Clackamas County Library. The proposal laid a convincing argument as to the patron/client need for the new purchases, what each new item would offer the reader/library and presented professional book reviews of each proposed purchase. This proposal was written in a concise format consistent with the standards of the professional setting. *The statistics used in this proposal are fictional.

3. Exhibit professional behavior, knowledge, and attitudes, based on client-centered philosophy and ethical guidelines.

For the course LI805: Organization Theories for Administering Information Agencies groups of use were assign scenarios that posed a professional problem that need to be solved. The problem my group was assigned involved a governing board voicing public concern for what they viewed as inappropriate behavior at the library. To address the problem we decided that “we” would make a presentation to the board about the library, it’s mission and how we propose to address any remaining concerns about the behavior that disrupt or interrupt the use of the library. The end product for this scenario is this Power Point that begins re-enforcing the values and mission of the library being patron/client centered and the ethical guidelines that we operate by.

4. Demonstrate leadership by displaying vision, and adaptability, openness to new ideas, and risk-taking behavior.

For the course LI855: Collection Development we performed debates in groups in front of the class about different collection development issues that arise in the library. This document is the prep work that I did to be able to argue the negative to “Libraries should acquire materials using new technologies as soon as they are readily available.” This class activity challenged me to be open to different perspectives and ideas, I also had to be able to think quickly about the topic adapting to the arguments presented by the pro side of the debate. This activity pushed us to take calculated risks as to what, when and how we presented and disputed the out sides arguments.

5. Imagine outside the box by demonstrating creativity in problem solving, management, and other professional activities.

This Spring I had the opportunity to plan an Earth Day event elementary school age children at the Milwaukie Ledding Library. As part of the City of Milwaukie, Sustainability Team I partnered with library staff to plan, advertise and out on an Earth Day event. Our event took place in the children’s library with 15 children and their parents attending. We read a story, played a decomposition guessing game, ran a recycling relay and ended with a “Litter Bug” craft time.
