SLIM Program Outcomes

1. Articulates a philosophy of client-centered information services based on the epistemological and ethical foundations of the library and information profession.

Throughout the Emporia State University, School of Library and Information Management, MLS program professors and guest speakers have emphasized the importance of the patron or client. In a library it is important to think of the patron or client from the ground, up. The handout I designed for LI802: Theoretical Foundations of Service Diagnosis and Customization course, highlights environmental impacts that a patron or client had, has and/or is experiencing before they enter and/or are in the library. The environment directly impacts our ability to serve them and their ability to be or become information literate. Therefore it is important for library design, construction and placement to foresee, account and mitigate for as many of these impacts as possible.

For the information transfer process to be successful it is also important to perform teaching sessions for multiple learning styles. My instructional design for the LI837: Teaching in the Information Profession course involved a thorough planning process to include multiple class activities that increase a student’s ability to learn through their own learning style. Ethically we have an obligation to design library structures, settings and learning sessions without bias, to allow for patrons/clients or would be access to information.

2. Explains and applies interdisciplinary theories and models relevant to managing library and information service agencies.

In the course LI810: Research and Inquiry in Library and Information Science, I wrote a research proposal for the Clackamas County Library Network to examine why people voted for the 2009 library district ballot. To write this proposal I had to explain and apply interdisciplinary theories and models including a literature review of Psychology, Library and Information Science and Political Science journals and books. This literature review was used in the application of the scientific mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research. Additionally elements of community analysis were integrated into the mixed method to allow the new library district to learn more about its patrons. The intended result of this research proposal would be to guide the decision process for managing library funding and services for the Clackamas County Library District. Knowing the community in which a library operates in should be considered essential for making management decisions. When published this study would service as a template or pro argument for other library systems who want to move their system management to a library district.

3. Conduct an information needs assessment, and design and evaluate customized information services and products based on those needs.

This paper is a proposal to change the library services for underserved ESL students at a imaginary community college library written for the course LI833: Information Transfer Among Special Populations. This proposal was a group effort chosen, because many of us had experience working with ESL populations in a variety of settings. For the purposes of his project we narrowed the subject to community college, because one of the group members was struggling with this issue at her work. As a group we performed a literature review researching the needs of this population, planned for implementing immediate changes and assessment for future/continuing changes in the library. Our project process and end product included a PowerPoint and presentation to the class acting as the as the hypothetical decision body of the college that would present to if the situation was in the workplace setting.

4. Based on a diagnosed need, retrieve, interpret, and/or repackage relevant information resources, and evaluate their use and impact.

As part of the course LI813: Basic Print and Electronic Information Sources, I conducted research and made a presentation with a partner about the information resources that health and medical professionals need to perform their jobs. Our research was repackaged into a Power Point that we presented to our class. The Power Point emphasized the most valuable and relevant information sources, their use, need and the role the information professional should play in serving health and medical professionals, echoing the professional skills of this outcome.

5. Lead appropriate change by using effective collaborative communication and organizational skills.

This group proposal for the course LI833: Information Transfer Among Special Populations was about an imaginary community college library that needed to improve services to their Spanish ESL students. As a group we used scholarly sources and personal experience to brainstorm the ways in which these students use or may want to use the library and how to mitigate for social, cultural and internal barriers that they may face when trying to access library services. We utilized these collaborative ideas and research to form the proposal objectives for achieving higher use of the library by Spanish ESL students and guidelines for overcoming barriers.

6. Teach information literacy skills in order to facilitate effective learning organizations.

In the course LI806: Global Information Infrastructure I wrote this annotated bibliography about Indigenous Information Literacy and the Global Information Infrastructure. The bibliography concentrated on the need and move for including indigenous information literacy in information discourse, education and research. The bibliography emphasized the need for public valuing and recognizing indigenous populations, their information and knowledge systems. This bibliography was the research that I used to make a poster for the Sofia, Bulgaria 2008 International Library Conference.

In the course LI837: Teaching in the Information Profession I designed a teaching session about the holds placement process for the Clackamas County Library District. My full design was meant for a teaching session of 30 to 45 minutes in length. For the purposes of the course we were required to teach our classmates a condensed version of our Instructional Design, I chose to teach the holds placement process that happens over the phone or in person. My instruction pedagogy included lecture, question and answer, role-playing, session evaluation and a handout all in about 15 minutes.

7. Demonstrate life-long learning skills by continually acquiring new knowledge, skills, and perspectives to respond to changing conditions.

In November 2008, I went to Sofia, Bulgaria to attend and present at their international library conference. To reflect on this experience I wrote this paper detailing the conference sessions I attended, the Key Note speaker and cultural experiences I had. This experience marked my first professional library conference attendance and presentation. In this paper I describe what it was like to learn new knowledge about my profession while wearing three hats: student, professional and traveler.

8. Communicate effectively in writing, orally, and in using information technologies.

When I began the course LI810: Research and Inquiry in Library and Information Science, I figured that I would make up some fictional research project to write my proposal on and then I realized that I new a topic that was not only interesting and political, but could potentially be conducted. I chose the write a proposal to study why people voted yes on the 2009 ballot to form the Clackamas County Library District. The effectiveness of my writing this proposal has lead to the possibility of actually conducting the research after my Master’s in complete.

For a group project in the cuorse LI843: Wed Design and Development I partnered with 3 other students to design a WordPress website about Farmers Markets. Idea behind this website is due to the positive benefits realized by many of our cohort and professors attending the Park Blocks Farmers Market on Saturdays during our MLS program from Spring into Fall we felt that we should get the word out about the benefits of shopping locally at the Farmers Market. The final product includes personal reviews of 5 different markets, photos, links, general history and information about farmers markets.

For my presentation at the Sofia, Bulgaria 2008 International Library Conference I made this poster. This poster highlights the key points of the importance of supporting and encouraging Indigenous Information Literacy. (Photo)
